The business meeting of the 53nd annual AACTM conference was called to order by President Bruce Atkinson. The minutes for the 2002 meeting were read and approved.
The following reports were given.
1. Treasurer's report
Janie Kennedy distributed a copy of the treasurer's report including
income and
expenditures since the last meeting. The balance as of the 2003 meeting was
$515.84.
2. Alabama Journal of Mathematics
Pat Rossi, the editor of the Journal, announced that the fall issue was due
out in the next few weeks. Submissions continue to come in, and there is
currently no backlog in reviews. Pat requested participation in editorial
and referee tasks -- there is no limit on the size of the editorial board,
and there is currently a need for referees in applied math. There has
been no recent progress in online content, but when it begins, it will include
PDF files for the upcoming issue. Ken Roblee will be taking over
the task of editing problems and solutions for the Journal.
3. Statewide High School Mathematics Contest.
Jeff Dodd, state director, announced that he will be stepping down as
director, and Jac Cole of Huntingdon College will be taking over the position.
Jeff and Jac are also seeking people to participate as "assistant directors."
The number of schools participating in the Contest remains low, but
stable. Jeff proposed "training workshops" for students and coaches to
encourage participation.
There was some discussion of whether participation is declining nationwide,
and of possible changes in the format of the Contest.
The finances for the contest are handled through ACTM -- the balance
is declining, but Jeff did not know how urgent the situation is.
4. Nomination Committee
The following slate of officers was presented:
| President | Tom Leathrum |
| Vice President | Pat Rossi |
| Treasurer | Janie Kennedy |
| Executive Council | Ken Roblee and Emily Hynds |
5. Resolutions Committee
Resolutions will be presented to thank the University of Alabama at Huntsville
for their
hospitality and for thanking Dr. Olav Kallenberg for the excellent
Lewis-Parker
Lecture.
It was further suggested that we submit a resolution thanking Prof. Jeff
Dodd for his years of service to the Statewide Mathematics Contest.
Jeff Dodd volunteered to work on the resolutions --- Bruce Atkinson will
contact him with further details.
In other business, the members present discussed the site for next year's meeting -- members present were allowed to volunteer, but it was also suggested that we have a site selection committee. Pat Rossi and Joe Albree volunteered for that committee. It was suggested, based on a past meeting there, that Judson College would be a good site. No one from there was present at this time, so Pat Rossi said he would call Ray Price (at Judson) to see if they would be willing to host.
There was further discussion regarding the selection of the Lewis-Parker Lecturer, to the effect that the selection process should not be handled at the last minute before the meeting. Joe Albree, who began this discussion, pointed out that the Lecture should also lead to a publication in the Journal, and that the Lecturer should be told this in advance. The committee for selecting the Lewis-Parker Lecturer (according to bylaws?) consists of the current President, the immediate past President, the Journal editor-in-chief, and last year's Lewis-Parker Lecturer (for 2003-2004, that would be Tom Leathrum, Bruce Atkinson, Pat Rossi, and Olav Kallenberg, respectively).
Tom Leathrum brought up the issue of compiling an e-mail list of AACTM members. Various people indicated that they would send Tom materials, and Tom volunteered to compile them for use next year.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
